How to Read Your Engagement (and What It’s Telling You)

You post a Reel and the numbers start coming in. But what are they actually telling you?

Each type of engagement means something different. Once you know what, you know what to post next.

How to read engagement: saves mean your value was good, sends mean your video was relatable, reposts mean people agreed, comments mean your video formed opinions

Who this is for: Service business owners, like salons, med spas, restaurants, and realtors, who post Reels and want to know what's working.

What Each Number Means

Likes and views tell you people saw it. These four tell you why it landed.

  • Lots of saves: your value was good. People want to come back to it.

  • Lots of sends: your video was relatable. People shared it with someone who gets it.

  • Lots of reposts: a lot of people agreed with what you said.

  • Lots of comments: your video formed a lot of opinions.

Look for your biggest number. That's what your audience is telling you.

The same idea works on TikTok and Facebook. Our beginner's guide to Facebook covers the basics there.

A Miami real estate client Reel's engagement: 1,229 saves, 1,030 shares, and 97 reposts, with saves highlighted as the top engagement, meaning the value was good

A Real Example: One of Our Clients

One of our clients is a Miami real estate team. Their Reel shows three levels of realtor: beginner, "experienced," and pro.

Each one hears the same line from a buyer: "Hey, I want to buy a house." Only the pro slows down and asks about pre-approval, budget, and monthly payment first.

The numbers: Our client shared these with us: 1,229 saves, 1,030 shares, and 97 reposts. Saves were the highest.

Bar chart of the client Reel: 1,229 saves, 1,030 shares, and 97 reposts, with saves leading

What the Numbers Tell Us

Saves came out on top with 1,229.

Lots of saves means your value was good. People want to come back to it.

  • Shares, 1,030: a close second. The video was relatable, so people sent it to someone.

  • Reposts, 97: far behind. Some people agreed, but that wasn't the main signal.

When saves lead, your video gave people something worth keeping.

Why people saved the client Reel: it teaches a real home buying process, the three-level format makes it easy to remember, and local Kendall, Doral, and Hialeah homes speak to Miami buyers

Why People Saved It

We can't see inside the algorithm. But the video gives clear clues.

  • A real process: get pre-approved and know your budget and monthly payment before touring homes. Buyers want to keep that for when they're ready.

  • Easy to remember: three levels make the lesson stick

  • Local: it names homes in Kendall, Doral, and Hialeah, so Miami buyers see themselves in it

Five steps to read your own engagement: open insights, find the top number, match it to its meaning, compare to your normal, do it again

How to Read Your Own Numbers

You don't need a spreadsheet. Start here.

  1. Open insights on your last few Reels

  2. Find the top number: saves, sends, reposts, or comments

  3. Match it: value, relatable, agreed, or opinions

  4. Compare it to your own normal, not someone else's

  5. Do it again: make more of what worked

Keep it honest: One strong post is a signal, not a trend. Watch the next few posts before you call it a pattern.
